From work at home mom to multi-location business owner
Vestavia Hills mother of two sets sights on a second location of her business, after navigating an uncertain 2020
Jennifer Murray didn’t initially see herself as a business owner. However, after becoming a mom and working remotely for several years, she was ready for a change. Fast forward a few years and she’s now preparing to open her second Pigtails & Crewcuts children’s hair salon in Trussville.
Murray recalls her path to becoming an owner in the Pigtails & Crewcuts franchise started when her husband mentioned that she didn’t seem excited about her job at the time. He asked her “What if you did what Jennifer Tribble does?” Murray had worked with Tribble, who owns three Pigtails & Crewcuts salons in Florida, previously in the construction industry.

“I never thought I’d be a business owner, but I knew marketing, so I talked to Jennifer and started putting some feelers out there. I eventually spoke to Andrew McGehee, an Area Representative who owns a few locations in Georgia, and realized the great potential I would have,” Murray shares. “At the time, there weren’t any children’s salon franchises in Alabama, so it would be the first of its kind. I initially thought I would open one salon, but
additional conversations with Andrew and Jennifer made me realize two salons made more sense for me, so I signed a two salon deal in April of 2019.”
Murray opened the doors to her first salon in Vestavia Hills in January 2020. The COVID-19 pandemic hit just two months later, so opening her second location in Trussville almost feels like starting over. “I’m looking forward to the challenge of growing the business with this new reality and the challenge of showing members of the community what we are
good at, why we want to be in Trussville, and why they should come to us for haircuts,” Murray says, adding “I’m excited to put lots of energy into it!”
Murray explains that Trussville was the perfect location for her second salon because the area offers great exposure and fits the target market for Pigtails & Crewcuts perfectly. The area is fast-growing and appealing to families with young children due to the schools, libraries, and plentiful shopping, dining, and entertainment options that cater to families.
“Trussville makes sense for lots of reasons. I personally come to Trussville for many of my own day-to-day activities and support the community by shopping and doing business here, so I know the area and know we’ll have great exposure,” she says. “My staff and I look forward to meeting our new customers when we open in Trussville, getting involved with the community, and showing everyone what Pigtails & Crewcuts is all about.”
Customers can expect to have loads of fun at Pigtails & Crewcuts’ Trussville location. Each Pigtails & Crewcuts salon offers a kid-friendly environment with bright colors, whimsical decor, and themed vehicle chairs, as well as movies, video games, and other tactics to keep kids happy and entertained throughout the haircut. The Trussville Pigtails & Crewcuts is expected to open in early December and will be located at 2050 Gadsden Highway, Suite 127 next to Taco Mama. Other nearby businesses include Wrapsody, Metro Diner, and Chicken Salad Chick.
The salon will be open Monday through Friday from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm and Saturdays from 9am – 5pm. Visit them online or follow the salon at on Facebook for updates.
